Big Communications hosts first AIGA Agency Open House

The Birmingham chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts will hold its first Agency Open House Thursday, June 28 at Big Communications, Birmingham’s 2006-07 Agency of the Year.

AIGA Birmingham plans to hold open houses every other month, with the next open house scheduled for Sept. 20 at Cayenne Creative Group. AIGA members and guests will be invited to tour the agency, meet-and-greet with colleagues and exchange ideas.

“AIGA encourages us to learn from each other, and we believe that sharing our work environments will help us do that by opening conversation about our creative process,” said AIGA Birmingham President Mathieu Schmutzler, who heads up Cayenne.

Schmutzler suggested holding the inaugural event at Big Communications, which is known for its unique office space in the Jemison Flats building on First Avenue North. The office includes a large dome skylight over the main room where art directors Shawn Castle and Brook Hagler create campaigns for clients such as the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Brookwood Village Mall, The Tutwiler Hotel and Cooper Green Mercy Hospital. President John Montgomery’s office overlooks Jemison Park, a small office park designed for social use by the building’s corporate and residential tenants.

Thursday’s open house will be held from 5-8 p.m. Big Communications is located at 1827 First Avenue North, Suite 200.
