Big Communications and the advertising agency’s oldest client, the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, took top honors at the Birmingham Advertising Federation’s Peak Awards Tuesday night for their work bringing the IN Birmingham campaign to life.
Big was named “Advertising Agency of the Year” and the CVB was named “Client of the Year” at the event. The Advertising Federation’s Peak Awards recognize media professionals and professional service people who strategize, produce, print, buy and sell advertising in the Birmingham market.
“Of course we’re flattered to be chosen as this market’s Client of the Year,” said GBCVB President James H. Smither. “We enjoy working with Big’s seasoned as well as younger talent, a mix that keeps our message fresh, strong and gives us three-dimensional appeal amid some very flat convention and tourism marketing.”
The IN campaign brought together the GBCVB, the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex and the Metropolitan Development Board in an advertising campaign to promote the area to meeting planners, new businesses and the traveling public.
The campaign went beyond the ordinary by including a local component in which the partners asked Birmingham residents to nominate their “IN” spots in Birmingham. The thousands of nominations were compiled into an IN book, highlighting Birmingham’s best places to wine, dine, read, shop and more.
“We feel honored to have teamed with the CVB for 13 years,” said Big President John Montgomery. “They are always willing to try something new and to take risks, and this year the whole team landed on a campaign that has already begun rebranding Birmingham and will continue doing that for years to come.”
Big Communications employees also took home several individual awards. Media Director Sally Russell Baio won “Media Planner of the Year,” Media Buyer Jessica Rosser won “Media Buyer of the Year,” and PR Coordinator Danielle Kimbrough was honored as “Industry Newcomer of the Year.”
