Big Communications, Inc. congratulates its design intern Brian Curtin, who took home a Gold award and a $1,250 scholarship at the 34th annual Birmingham Advertising Federation Addy Awards Feb. 16.
Big Communications art directors Shawn Castle and Brook Hagler encouraged Curtin to enter his student project “About Face – A Typographers Survival Guide.” The assignment, Curtin said, was to create a guide to different type faces. He and project partners Meagan Peace and Haley Jimmerson developed the winning project, which featured a chain-bound flip book designed to fit in a vintage army pouch.
“He showed us the project when he interviewed for our spring internship, and it stood out from most student work we’ve seen,” Hagler said. “It shows that he is not only a talented designer but has the creative ideas to become an art director as well.”
Big Communications President John Montgomery said recruiting young talent is essential to the success of any agency. “I’m proud of my creative team for recognizing Brian’s talent even before he was acknowledged by our industry peers,” Montgomery said.
The agency was also recognized at the Addy awards, taking home five silver awards to top its four awards last year. Winning projects included work for McWane Science Center, the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, Birmingham Airport Authority, and Big Communication’s own holiday greeting cards. The robot designed for the “McWane Your Brain” campaign took silver in the illustration category, and a commemorative 75th Anniversary book highlighting the history and advancements of the Birmingham Airport won silver among promotional collateral.
Big was also recognized with awards for two Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce projects. The first was for a campaign promoting the chamber’s annual media night and the second award was for the Magic City CD cover Big created for the Chamber’s Annual Meeting. The CD took home silver for packaging sales promotion.
Clients and friends on Big Communication’s holiday card list are already familiar with the package that was awarded a Silver ADDY in the Industry Self-Promotion category. Each employee at Big took a digital photo of their favorite Birmingham spot for a package of post cards that showed off the agency’s personality as well as Birmingham’s. Now in its second year, the “Big On Birmingham” post card set has become an annual tradition.
