They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and when it comes to judges of Communication Arts’ 64th Photography Competition, Big’s visually stunning image for UAB Callahan Eye was clearly impressive on a global scale.

The most exclusive major photography competition in the world, the 2023 call for entries drew 2,236 total submissions. Of those, only 122, representing the work of only 121 photographers, were selected.

Our award-winning “Looking Beyond” entry, honored in the advertising category, was led by Big creative director Shannon Harris and photography partner Stephanie Eley. The photography created for the “Visionary Care” campaign elevates the visibility of UAB Callahan Eye, the country’s leading specialists in eye disease and trauma treatment. Eley’s expertise in utilizing experimental light and vivid color brought the campaign to life, strategically enhancing UAB Callahan Eye’s profile among a new generation of potential patients while reaffirming its relevance to current patients. This artistic approach not only honors the organization’s deep roots in the arts community but also establishes the hospital as an innovative leader in the field.

Competition jurors consisted of photo/visual editors, visual professors and agency creative directors representing universities, companies and key publications, namely National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, The Globe and Mail and The Wall Street Journal.

Big’s “Looking Beyond” and all other selections will be reproduced in the July/August 2023 issue of Communication Arts, both in print and digital editions. More than 25,000 copies of the issue will be distributed worldwide to subscribers and by single copy sales through art stores, book stores, or direct from, assuring important exposure to the creators and publishers of these award-winning images — including our own.
